Today, 10 th of June 10, 2019, we remember the life of late Ray Charles, a legendary musician who pioneered the genre of soul music during the 1950s. The famous singer, not only recognized for his music, lost his sight at a young age, result of an apparently undiagnosed glaucoma.

Glaucoma is a group of diseases that cause damage to the optic nerve, usually because of an increase in the intraocular pressure. In general, it does not come with any symptoms and the patient is not aware of it (therefore it is known as “silent blindness”).

Being a disease with minimum symptoms until it is very advanced, the best strategy is the early detection of it. When we diagnose a glaucoma in its initial stages, we can avoid its progressions and a significant damage of the optic nerve with appropriate treatments.

To prevent glaucoma, we recommend:

● If you have family history of glaucoma, or have a disease that predisposes to
glaucoma, perform your checks more often.
● Exercise moderately on a regular basis, take care of your diet, avoid smoking
and do not abuse caffeine intake or other stimulants.
● Visit your ophthalmologist regularly.
